TRIGGER POINT THERAPY
Trigger points are areas of hyperirritability within skeletal muscle tissue that can cause pain in other parts of the body.
Trigger points can control the contractile state of muscles, making them tight. They are commonly referred to as knots and can be felt as a tender and palpable nodule. They can be constantly painful or can go unnoticed until prolonged postures are held or pressure is applied by the practitioner.
Trigger points can control the contractile state making them tight, weak and irresponsive to stretching, leading to decreased range of motion and joint limitation. Trigger points can often cause associated trigger points or refer pain to another location.
Trigger points can be released via trigger point therapy (or Trigger Point Release Massage Therapy), where the practitioner applies and releases pressure to the targeted area, or alternatively uses dry needling.
