Lymphatic Drainage Massage in South Melbourne

Heavy, puffy legs by the end of the day. Swelling that lingers after a long flight or a week of standing. Ankles that mark when you press them. These are the complaints people bring to lymphatic drainage, and they rarely respond to a firm, deep massage.

At Melbourne Myotherapy & Remedial Massage, lymphatic drainage is delivered by therapists specifically trained in the technique, at our clinic on York Street in South Melbourne.

What Lymphatic Drainage Actually Is

Your lymphatic system is a network of very fine vessels sitting just under the skin. Unlike your circulation, it has no pump of its own. It relies on movement, breathing and the squeeze of surrounding muscle to shift fluid along.

Lymphatic drainage massage works with that system rather than against it. The pressure is light, the rhythm is slow and repetitive, and the direction of every stroke matters. It is closer to a gentle stretch of the skin than to kneading muscle.

This is the part that surprises first-timers: if it feels deep, it is not lymphatic work. Heavy pressure flattens the very vessels the treatment is trying to open.

Who Tends to Book It

  • Fluid retention and heaviness: legs and ankles that swell through the day, or after long hours seated or standing.
  • Travel and long flights: puffiness that has not settled after a few days back on the ground.
  • Pregnancy-related swelling: commonly in the lower legs and feet, treated alongside our pregnancy massage.
  • Recovery between training blocks: a lighter option on days when deep tissue work would be too much.
  • Sensitivity to firm pressure: people who want therapeutic treatment but find deep tissue massage uncomfortable.

Who Provides It at Our Clinic

Lymphatic drainage is a trained technique, not something every massage therapist offers. Two of our team work with it directly:

  • Magda Cymanek — Australian-trained remedial massage therapist and integrated bodywork practitioner with over 12 years of experience, combining lymphatic drainage with myofascial release and exercise therapy. Registered with the Australian Natural Therapies Association.
  • Nathan Wilkinson — remedial and NeuroKinetic therapist who draws on lymphatic drainage alongside scar tissue release, craniosacral therapy and movement education. Registered with Massage & Myotherapy Australia.

When you book, mention lymphatic drainage in the notes so you are matched to the right therapist.

What to Expect in a Session

Your therapist will ask what you have noticed and when it is worst, check the areas involved, and confirm there is no reason to hold off. Treatment then begins near the collarbone and works toward the affected limb, because the drainage points closest to the trunk need to be clear before anything further out will move.

Sessions run 30, 60 or 90 minutes, and current prices are shown when you book online. Most people find it unusually relaxing and some feel lighter immediately; for persistent swelling, a short series tends to work better than a single visit.

Afterwards: drink water and keep moving gently. Unlike deep tissue work, there is no post-treatment soreness to expect.

An Honest Note on Lymphoedema and Post-Surgical Care

Lymphatic drainage for general fluid retention and heaviness is what we offer here, and we are glad to help with it.

Diagnosed lymphoedema, and recovery immediately following cancer surgery or lymph node removal, are different. Those need a certified lymphoedema therapist working with your treating doctor, and we will say so rather than take the booking. If you are not sure which category you fall into, call us on (03) 9877 6167 and we will tell you honestly — including when the answer is someone other than us.

Please also let us know before booking if you have a heart or kidney condition, an active infection, or a blood clot history, as these can make the treatment unsuitable.

Lymphatic Drainage: Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a normal massage?

Pressure and purpose. A remedial or deep tissue massage works into muscle to change how tissue moves. Lymphatic drainage uses very light, slow, repetitive strokes on the skin to encourage fluid along vessels that sit just beneath it. If you book expecting a firm massage you will be surprised by how gentle it is, which is exactly as it should be.

Does it hurt?

No. It is one of the gentlest treatments we offer and most people find it deeply relaxing. There is no post-treatment soreness of the kind you might get after deep tissue work.

How many sessions will I need?

Occasional puffiness after travel or a heavy week often responds to a single session. Swelling that has been there for months usually needs a short series, and your therapist will give you an honest estimate after the first visit rather than an open-ended schedule.

I have lymphoedema, or I have had surgery. Can you treat me?

For diagnosed lymphoedema, or recovery straight after cancer surgery or lymph node removal, you need a certified lymphoedema therapist working alongside your doctor, and we will refer you rather than take the booking. Call us on (03) 9877 6167 if you are unsure which applies to you.

Can I claim it on private health insurance?

Our therapists are registered with ANTA and Massage & Myotherapy Australia, so treatment is eligible for private health fund rebates where your extras cover includes remedial massage. Rebate amounts depend on your fund and level of cover.

Can I book online?

Yes. Book online at any time and add a note asking for lymphatic drainage so we can match you to Magda or Nathan.
