Remedial Massage & Myotherapy for Southbank

We are 1.3 kilometres from Southbank. For most people that is a fifteen-minute walk or a single tram, which makes us about as close as a clinical massage practice gets without being in the building.

At Melbourne Myotherapy & Remedial Massage every first visit starts with an assessment rather than a routine, because the sore spot and the cause are often not the same thing.

What Southbank Brings Through the Door

Tower offices. Southbank’s office floors produce the same complaint on repeat: a neck that stiffens by mid-afternoon, one shoulder sitting higher than the other, headaches that build from the base of the skull. It is almost always a desk setup and a mid-back that has stopped rotating, not the muscle you can feel.

Hospitality and the arts precinct. Between the restaurants, the hotels, the Arts Centre and the Recital Centre, a lot of Southbank works long hours standing, carrying, or holding an instrument in the same position. Feet, calves, lower back and forearms take it. Musicians in particular tend to arrive with something very specific and very one-sided.

Apartment living without a car. A large share of Southbank does not drive, which is usually what makes distance matter. Here it does not: you can walk it along the river, or take one tram.

What We Treat

  • Myotherapy — for complex or long-standing problems, and pain that keeps returning to the same place.
  • Remedial massage — for muscular tightness and recovery that responds to hands-on work.
  • Deep tissue massage — slower, firmer work into the deeper layers.
  • Trigger point therapy — for knots that refer pain somewhere else entirely.
  • Myofascial release — also called fascia release, for connective tissue that has stopped gliding.
  • Lymphatic drainage — light-pressure work for swelling, puffiness and heaviness, including after long flights.
  • Sports massage — pre-event, post-event and mid-season.
  • Pregnancy massage — on a purpose-made table, so you can lie face down comfortably.

Who You Will Be Seeing

Our therapists are registered with Massage & Myotherapy Australia, the Myotherapy Association Australia, ANTA or AMT, so treatment is eligible for private health fund rebates where your extras cover includes it. No referral is needed.

The clinic has been treating pain, injury and restricted movement in South Melbourne since 2009. Most of that work is not dramatic: it is people who sit too long, stand too long, or have been carrying the same shoulder for two years and have stopped expecting it to change.

Southbank Massage: Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly are you in relation to Southbank?

1/216 York Street, South Melbourne, directly across from South Melbourne Market. From most of Southbank that is about 1.3 kilometres, a fifteen to twenty minute walk, or one stop on the Route 96 tram.

Can I come before or after work?

Yes. We are open 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, including public holidays. Early morning and evening slots book out first.

I am on my feet all shift. What would help?

Describe it when you book. Long hours standing usually show up through the calves, feet and lower back, and often respond to a mix of remedial work and a few specific things to do at home. If there is swelling or heaviness through the legs as well, lymphatic drainage may be the better starting point.

What is the difference between remedial massage and myotherapy?

Scope. Remedial massage treats the soft tissue directly and suits muscular tightness and recovery. Myotherapy covers that and adds joint mobilisation, dry needling, movement assessment and exercise prescription, which suits complex or long-standing problems. If you are unsure, describe the problem when you book and we will match you to the right practitioner.

Do I need a referral, and can I claim on private health?

No referral is required; you can book directly. Our practitioners are registered with Massage & Myotherapy Australia, the Myotherapy Association Australia, ANTA and AMT, so treatment is eligible for private health fund rebates where your extras cover includes it. Rebate amounts depend on your fund and level of cover.
