FAQ – Myotherapy & Remedial Massage
Melbourne Myotherapy & Remedial Massage
We’ve put together answers to the most common questions we receive about myotherapy and remedial massage so you know exactly what to expect before you book.
General Questions About Myotherapy & Remedial Massage
What is myotherapy?
Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy that focuses on the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction. It targets muscles, joints, nerves, and the surrounding soft tissues (like fascia) using hands-on techniques, dry needling, stretching, and corrective exercises. The goal is not just short-term relief, but long-term improvement in function, mobility, and pain levels.
What is remedial massage?
Remedial massage is a targeted, therapeutic form of massage that works on muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues to reduce pain, release tension, and improve joint mobility. It often uses techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger-point release, and myofascial work to address specific problem areas rather than just providing general relaxation.
What is the difference between myotherapy and remedial massage?
Both myotherapy and remedial massage treat musculoskeletal pain, but myotherapy usually involves a more detailed assessment and a broader range of treatment techniques (such as dry needling, joint mobilisation, and exercise prescription), while remedial massage is more focused on hands-on soft tissue work. In practice, myotherapy is often suited to more complex or chronic issues, while remedial massage is ideal when you need focused, hands-on muscle relief and recovery.
Which treatment is right for my condition?
If you’re dealing with ongoing or complex pain (such as long-term back pain, recurring headaches, nerve-related symptoms, or sports injuries that haven’t settled), myotherapy is usually the best starting point because it includes a more comprehensive assessment and targeted treatment plan. If your main concern is muscular tightness, general soreness, or you’re looking for maintenance between heavier training blocks or busy work periods, remedial massage may be more appropriate. If you’re unsure, we can help you choose the right option when you contact us or at your first session.
Do you offer dry needling?
Yes. Where appropriate, our myotherapists may use dry needling as part of your treatment to help release overactive muscles, reduce pain, and improve movement. This is always discussed with you first, and it’s never compulsory, if you’d prefer not to have needles, we will use other effective hands-on techniques instead.
Conditions & Treatment Effectiveness
What conditions can myotherapy and remedial massage treat?
Myotherapy and remedial massage can help with a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including:
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Lower back pain and stiffness
- Headaches, migraines, and some types of jaw pain (TMJ)
- Sports and running injuries (e.g., shin splints, ITB issues, muscle strains)
- Tendon and overuse problems (e.g., tennis elbow, Achilles issues)
- Postural pain from desk work and device use
- General muscle tightness, fatigue, and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
These therapies are commonly used to support people recovering from sport, work, stress, and everyday life demands.
Can treatment help with chronic pain?
Yes. While chronic pain is often complex, myotherapy and remedial massage can be very helpful in reducing pain levels, improving movement, and supporting your day-to-day function. Treatment usually combines hands-on work with education, movement strategies, and home exercises so you’re not relying on passive care alone.
Can you help with sports injuries?
Absolutely. We regularly work with runners, gym-goers, field sport athletes, and recreational competitors to manage and recover from sports injuries such as muscle strains, tendon issues, ITB friction, shin pain, and overuse injuries. We focus on both short-term pain relief and long-term performance, tailoring treatment to your sport, training load, and goals.
Do you treat office-related or posture-related pain?
How many sessions will I need?
The duration of your care depends on your unique condition, the chronicity of your symptoms, and your personal health goals. While some individuals experience significant relief early on, more complex issues often benefit from a structured course of treatment combined with home exercises and lifestyle adjustments to ensure the best long-term results. We will discuss a fully individualized plan with you at your first appointment.
How often should I get treatment?
For an acute flare-up or new injury, it is common to start with more frequent sessions and gradually increase the time between appointments as your condition improves. Many people with ongoing workloads or demanding training programs choose regular maintenance sessions to stay on top of tension and prevent issues from returning. The exact frequency will be tailored to your body, work demands, and activity levels.
What to Expect During Treatment
What happens during the first appointment?
At your first appointment, your therapist will:
- Take a detailed history of your symptoms, work, sport, and relevant medical background.
- Perform a physical assessment (such as movement tests, palpation, and muscle/joint checks).
- Explain their findings in clear, simple language.
- Discuss a treatment plan with you and gain your consent.
- Begin hands-on treatment tailored to your goals, which may include techniques like soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, dry needling, stretching, or taping.
You’ll also receive advice on what to do between sessions to support your recovery.
How long does a session take?
The duration of your session is flexible and tailored to your specific needs. While shorter appointments may suit focused work, longer sessions are generally recommended for initial visits or when addressing multiple areas of concern. We will determine the most effective timeframe for you based on the complexity of your requirements and your treatment goals.
Is the treatment painful?
You may feel some discomfort during certain techniques, especially when working on very tight or irritated areas, but treatment should never feel unbearable. We always work within your comfort levels and adjust pressure or technique based on your feedback. Some people experience mild soreness for up to 24–48 hours afterward, which usually settles and is followed by improved ease of movement.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated (for example, shorts for leg issues, a singlet or sports bra for shoulder and upper back work). If we need you to change into clinic shorts or adjust clothing for access, your privacy and comfort are always respected.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
If you have relevant medical reports, imaging (such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound), or referral letters, you’re welcome to bring them. They can help your therapist better understand the history of your condition. A list of medications or previous treatments can also be useful.
What should I do after treatment?
Your therapist will give you specific aftercare advice, which may include:
- Drinking water and avoiding heavy exercise immediately after a strong session
- Gentle movement or stretching to keep things from tightening back up
- Using heat or ice if appropriate for your condition
- Following any prescribed exercises or self-release techniques
If you’re ever unsure about what you should or shouldn’t do after treatment, just ask, we’re happy to clarify.
Safety, Qualifications & Professional Standards
Are your therapists qualified and insured?
Yes. Our therapists are fully qualified in myotherapy and/or remedial massage and hold appropriate professional memberships and insurance. In Australia, recognised myotherapists and remedial massage therapists must meet education standards, maintain current first aid, hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and engage in ongoing professional development.
Is myotherapy safe?
For most people, myotherapy is a safe and effective way to manage musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction when provided by a properly trained therapist. Your therapist will screen for any contraindications or medical conditions, adapt techniques to your needs, and communicate with you throughout the session.
Is remedial massage safe for everyone?
Are there any conditions where treatment is not recommended?
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No. You do not need a referral to see a myotherapist or remedial massage therapist in most cases. You can book directly. However, if you are under a specific medical program or workers’ compensation scheme, there may be additional referral or paperwork requirements.
Can I claim myotherapy or remedial massage on private health insurance?
Many Australian private health funds offer rebates for myotherapy and remedial massage under Extras cover, though the level of cover and claiming categories vary between funds and policies. We will provide an invoice/receipt with all the details you need to claim, and we recommend checking with your health fund directly to confirm your eligibility, limits, and any waiting periods.
Booking, Pricing & Practical Information
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment by:
- Using our online booking system (recommended for fastest confirmation), or
- Calling the clinic during opening hours to speak with our reception team.
If you’re unsure which service to book, our team can guide you based on your symptoms and goals.
Do you offer ongoing treatment plans or maintenance sessions?
Yes. For many people, especially office workers, athletes, and those with chronic pain, ongoing or maintenance care can be very helpful. After your assessment, your therapist will discuss whether a structured treatment plan or periodic check-ins are recommended for your situation.
How do I know which practitioner or treatment to choose?
If you already know that you respond well to a particular approach (for example, strong hands-on work or lots of movement-based rehab), you may choose based on practitioner profiles. If not, you can:
- Book a myotherapy session for complex, long-standing, or sports-related issues, or
- Book remedial massage for primarily muscular tightness and recovery.
You can always contact us and describe your symptoms; we’ll recommend the best starting point.
What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
We kindly ask for adequate notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, so we can offer that time to someone else in need. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee, as it is difficult to fill that space at short notice. Full details are provided in your booking confirmation.
Do you offer same-day or urgent appointments?
Where possible, we do our best to accommodate same-day or urgent bookings—especially for acute pain or sudden flare-ups. Availability will depend on the day and practitioner schedule, so it’s best to check online or call us directly.
