Elite Expertise: The Clinical Lead

Our results-driven methodology is spearheaded by a dedicated, qualified Myotherapist and industry staple since 2009. This professional expertise is forged in high-pressure elite sporting environments, including the AFL, Powerlifting, Strongman, and Athletics. A deep understanding of biomechanics, honed through work with triathletes and MMA competitors, allows our lead therapist to translate high-performance recovery strategies into everyday clinical care.

Whether you are a professional athlete or a corporate executive in South Melbourne, you receive a sophisticated standard of manual therapy designed to solve the puzzle of your physical discomfort.

What is Myotherapy? A Clinical Approach to Movement

Myotherapy is a specialized branch of manual medicine focused on the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. While a general massage provides surface-level relaxation, Myotherapy Melbourne targets the “big picture” by treating the body’s connective network: muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia.

Our Diagnostic Process: Beyond the "Sore Spot"

Effective recovery requires clinical accuracy. At our South Melbourne clinic, we move beyond the immediate area of pain to identify the root cause of your restriction through a structured four-pillar evaluation:

→ Detailed Clinical History:
We review your medical background, previous injuries, and imaging (X-rays/MRIs) to ensure treatment is medically sound.

→ Lifestyle & Training Context:
We analyze the external stresses impacting your health, from corporate postural strain to high-volume training blocks at Albert Park.

→ Tailored Treatment Plan:
We reject “routine” massages. You receive a personalized recovery strategy built around your goals, whether returning to the gym or living pain-free.

Registered with ANTA and Massage & Myotherapy Australia, our team provides the professional rigor needed to translate these findings into lasting physical freedom.

I have known/seen Chris for over 4-5 years now - and I was lucky I had accidentally stumbled across him at the time because wow! Not only did I see an improvement in my overal/general wellbeing and reduced overall pain, I've also seen him grow and develop new/different techniques so that he can be better and treat us as clients/patients more effectively! The one session that particularly stood out to me was when I had fallen down the stairs and I sprained my ankle (which was a regular occurrence due to an ATFL tear) - I could barely walk due to the pain. I went in to see him 2 days later so I could at least tolerate the walking by limping. Not only did I walk out of there without an ankle brace, I walked out of there without pain and no limping! And the cause of the ankle pain / instability / weakness was due to dysfunction at my knees. This review isn't enough to compliment/describe the incredible work he does. He listens to you, and tries to solve it (along side other issues) by finding the "root" cause of your pain vs just treating the symptoms at the specific problem area only (which ends up fixing a whole bunch of other issues that I never thought I had). He's the one that taught me to always listen to your body, to listen to the pain you feel and how it holds and stores in your body, and that you're not crazy! After my poor experience/lack of trust with previous practitioners, this was incredibly refreshing and validating to hear; and to add the fact that he gets the results, makes it even better. I will never stop recommending him! - You will not regret it!

I have had knee pain for three years now. I had been to physios, specialists, clinical pilates, hydrotherapy, Shockwave therapy and more. Been seeing Chris for three months now and it's been the only thing that has made any change with my knee in the last three years. I am now able to walk down stairs which I couldn't beforehand I am now able to do a medium squat and build my muscles where I was not able to before. I am in a lot less pain and it just keeps getting better and better and the fact that he works with fascia is something that I've never done before. it's amazing what he does and it's amazing how he knows the body and what it needs. Thankyou very much.

Chris is incredible at what he does. I would've never thought to go to a myotherapist for pain relief, but Chris is methodical in getting to the source to fix the symptoms. Highly recommend.

Myotherapy vs Remedial Massage: Which Do You Need?

The two overlap, and plenty of people book one when the other would serve them better. The practical difference is scope.

Remedial massage treats the soft tissue directly. A therapist assesses the area, then works on the muscles and fascia with deep tissue, trigger point and myofascial techniques. It suits muscular tightness, recovery between training blocks, and pain that responds to hands-on work.

Myotherapy covers that and extends further. It adds joint mobilisation, dry needling where appropriate, movement assessment and exercise prescription. It suits complex or long-standing problems, pain that keeps returning to the same place, and injuries that have not settled with treatment elsewhere.

A simple rule: if the muscle is the problem, remedial massage is usually enough. If the muscle is the symptom and something upstream keeps causing it, myotherapy is the better starting point. If you are unsure, describe the problem when you book and we will match you to the right practitioner.

Myotherapy: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a myotherapist actually do?

A myotherapist assesses how you move, identifies which muscles and joints are driving your pain, then treats them with hands-on therapy. Depending on the assessment that may include dry needling, joint mobilisation, trigger point therapy or muscle energy techniques, followed by exercise advice so the result holds between appointments.

What is the difference between myotherapy and physiotherapy?

Both assess and treat musculoskeletal problems, and there is genuine overlap. Myotherapy is weighted toward hands-on soft tissue and joint work, with exercise used to support it. Physiotherapy is generally weighted toward exercise-based rehabilitation and is more often involved in post-surgical and neurological care. Many people use both, and we refer on when that is the better path.

Does myotherapy hurt?

Some techniques create a firm, dull ache while a tight area releases, particularly over a trigger point. It should never be sharp or intolerable. Pressure is adjusted to what you can comfortably tolerate and your therapist will check as they work. Mild tenderness for a day afterwards is common and settles on its own.

How many myotherapy sessions will I need?

It depends on how long the problem has been there. An acute issue often responds within a few sessions, while a long-standing pattern usually needs a longer plan combined with exercise. You will get an honest estimate after your first assessment rather than an open-ended schedule.

Is dry needling included in a myotherapy session?

Dry needling is one of the techniques available within a myotherapy session where it suits the presentation and you are comfortable with it. It is never compulsory, and effective alternatives such as trigger point therapy and myofascial release are always available if you would prefer not to use needles.

Do I need a referral, and can I claim on private health?

No referral is required; you can book directly. Our practitioners are registered with Massage & Myotherapy Australia, the Myotherapy Association Australia, ANTA and AMT, so treatment is eligible for private health fund rebates where your extras cover includes it. Rebate amounts depend on your fund and level of cover.
