Remedial Massage & Myotherapy for Richmond

We are not in Richmond. Our clinic is on York Street in South Melbourne, a short trip across the river, and a lot of what we treat walks in from Richmond and Cremorne.

If the drive is worth it to you, it is usually because you want an assessment and a plan rather than an hour of generic massage. That is what Melbourne Myotherapy & Remedial Massage does.

Why People Travel Here From Richmond

The Cremorne desk. Cremorne sits inside Richmond’s 3121 and holds a large share of Melbourne’s tech and media offices. The pattern that comes out of it is predictable: tight through the upper traps and the base of the neck, a shoulder that aches by Thursday, headaches that start behind the eyes late in the afternoon. It is rarely the sore spot that is the problem. It is the hours, the monitor height and a mid-back that has stopped moving.

The Yarra and the gyms. Richmond runs. The river trail, the Tan a few minutes away, and a dense strip of gyms and studios along Swan Street and Bridge Road. What follows is familiar: shin splints, a calf that keeps grabbing, runner’s knee, a hip that will not settle after a big block of training.

The sport precinct. With the MCG and AAMI Park on the doorstep, we see plenty of people who play rather than watch — football, cricket, soccer, and the weekend warriors who train harder than their recovery allows.

What We Treat

Every first visit starts with an assessment, not a routine. Your therapist works out what is driving the problem, treats it, and gives you something to do between sessions so the result holds.

  • Myotherapy — for complex or long-standing problems, and pain that keeps returning to the same place.
  • Remedial massage — for muscular tightness and recovery that responds to hands-on work.
  • Deep tissue massage — slower, firmer work into the deeper layers.
  • Sports massage — pre-event, post-event and mid-season, for anyone training regularly.
  • Dry needling — where a tight band of muscle will not release with hands alone. Never compulsory.
  • Myofascial release — also called fascia release, for connective tissue that has stopped gliding.
  • Lymphatic drainage — light-pressure work for swelling, puffiness and heaviness.
  • Pregnancy massage — on a purpose-made table, so you can lie face down comfortably.

Getting Here From Richmond

Driving: straight down Punt Road and across to Kings Way, then into South Melbourne. There is ample street parking on York Street, which is the part most people worry about and the part that is easiest here.

Public transport: a train from Richmond into Flinders Street, then the Route 96 tram, which stops a minute’s walk from our door at South Melbourne Market.

Hours: we are open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm, including public holidays. If you work in Cremorne, that means an appointment before work or well after it, not a day off.

Who You Will Be Seeing

Our therapists are registered with Massage & Myotherapy Australia, the Myotherapy Association Australia, ANTA or AMT, so treatment is eligible for private health fund rebates where your extras cover includes it. No referral is needed.

Between them they have worked with AFL, rugby union and rugby league programs, powerlifting and strongman, triathlon and athletics, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. That background matters less for the names involved than for what it teaches: how to load tissue without aggravating it, and when to stop.

Equally, most of our week is not elite sport. It is people who sit too long, lift something awkwardly, or have been carrying the same shoulder for two years.

Richmond Massage: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a clinic in Richmond?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. Our only clinic is at 1/216 York Street, South Melbourne. It is a short drive down Punt Road, or a train to Flinders Street and the Route 96 tram. If you want somewhere you can walk to from Swan Street, we are not it.

I work in Cremorne. Can I come before or after work?

Yes. We are open 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, including public holidays. Early morning and evening appointments are the ones that go first, so book ahead if you need a specific time.

Is parking difficult?

Less difficult than Richmond. There is street parking on York Street and the surrounding blocks, and we are directly across from South Melbourne Market.

What is the difference between remedial massage and myotherapy?

Scope. Remedial massage treats the soft tissue directly and suits muscular tightness and recovery. Myotherapy covers that and adds joint mobilisation, dry needling, movement assessment and exercise prescription, which suits complex or long-standing problems. If you are unsure, describe the problem when you book and we will match you to the right practitioner.

Do I need a referral, and can I claim on private health?

No referral is required; you can book directly. Our practitioners are registered with Massage & Myotherapy Australia, the Myotherapy Association Australia, ANTA and AMT, so treatment is eligible for private health fund rebates where your extras cover includes it. Rebate amounts depend on your fund and level of cover.
